Some bastard animal has dug in all my pots, killing two thirds of my crop of zinnia seedlings and snapping off my most promising scarlet runner bean at the base. Adding the recent torrential rain, which de-flowered most of my annuals (and has left my columbine looking soggy and wretched) the container garden is a sad sight this week. Nature, however, being an impersonal force, I can’t blame it, but whoever dug up my zinnia starts has miffed me greatly.

I am suspicious of the squirrels, but it seems like such a weird thing to do that I wonder if it was a stray cat.
